REMINDER: Meeting Tomorrow

Hi all,

Just a reminder that we have a meeting tomorrow, February 9th at 5:00pm in Foster 314. We have a speaker coming, Katie Bishop, who is a recruiter from Travelers Insurance. She will be giving us interview and resume tips (very important for getting your first internship/job).

This is also a very good networking opportunity, as Travelers offers a wide variety of jobs to those of ALL majors.

There will be FREE PIZZA again at this meeting so don’t miss out!

Note: Those of you who have committed to the Chicago trip or are interested, please try to make it to this meeting so we can go over more details afterward.

Meeting Follow-up

Hi all,

There are a few important things from our meeting on Tuesday for those of you who missed it:

  • I’ve attached the PowerPoint from the meeting which summarizes all we went over
  • I’ve attached information about the IASA Scholarship, as well as the application itself (DEADLINE: Feb. 29)
    • I highly recommend applying for this scholarship because they are extremely generous and Baylor has a high success rate with getting insurance-related scholarships!
  • I have attached the membership form–you can fill it out and give it, along with the one-time $30 check to Dr. Seward in Foster 120.03
  • IMPORTANT: The NAPSLO Symposium in Chicago is March 18-19 and we have limited spots available. The deadline to sign up is February 18th
    • This is a FREE trip to Chicago to go to a conference that has professional speakers, career fairs, and socials–it is a lot of fun
    • You get to explore downtown Chicago, have great career opportunities, and get to know students from other GIS chapters
    • Let me know if you are interested and I will give you more information

***Our next meeting is this coming Tuesday, February 9th. We have a speaker from the Travelers Insurance company (the #2 commercial Property/Casualty insurer in the country) who is a recruiter. Travelers is aggressively recruiting students from Baylor for all sorts of positions (for ALL business majors), so I recommend going to this meeting as an opportunity to network. She will also give interviewing and resume tips. Your resume and interviews are the only impressions companies get before hiring you so it is worth knowing what they want!

There will be more free pizza at this meeting!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Importance: High

Good Morning Professor:

Each year the AAMGA Education Foundation conducts a White Paper Research Contest for students enrolled in Risk Management & Insurance Programs, at Colleges and Universities across the country. The contest allows students to differentiate themselves by researching a topic of relevant interest or an emerging risk within the wholesale insurance industry, and to receive one of three $1,000 scholarships, an all-expense paid trip and registration to the 90th AAMGA Annual Meeting, May 22-25, 2016 at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort in Scottsdale, AZ for them and their professor or advisor, and the opportunity to shadow an AAMGA member during their meetings at the conference. The winning papers are also published in the May issue of Wholesale Insurance News magazine.

I invite you to share this information with your RMI students.

This year the Education Foundation is teaming up with the Association’s Emerging Issues & Trends Committee. The topics have been sorted into three categories based on areas of work and research the Committee is undertaking on developments within the industry.

Please click on this link to see and share a full copy of the 2016 White Paper Brochure.

Research Criteria: Focusing on the Wholesale Insurance Perspective

There are a number or emerging issues and trends taking place in today’s market impacting the wholesale insurance industry:

Industry Concerns Impact on the Wholesaler
· Increasing Capacity
· Federal and State Regulation
· Standard Markets Infringing on E&S Market
· Entrance of Nontraditional Companies into Insurance Industry
· Increasing Consolidation (Retailer, Wholesaler, Carrier)
· Erosion of Wholesale Distribution Value Proposition

Emerging Risks and how wholesalers can best address them
· Autonomous Vehicles
· Increasing Cyber Exposures
· Global Climate Change
· Impact of Hydraulic Fracking on Insurance Exposures
· Growth of Peer to Peer Sharing Economy

Technology and the Wholesaler
· Big Data Enables Use of Predictive Analytics
· Widening Technology Gaps
· Internet of Things
· Preparation for the Seamless User Experience
· Increasing Challenges in Workforce Dynamics

Students mayselect a topic from one of the three above categories, and provide a White Paper supporting the trend, including reference to source documents. Links to source documents are acceptable to control the length of the paper. The Papers shall examine and include:

· Implications – what potential implications does this trend present to the wholesale insurance market?
· Opportunities – what opportunities does the trend provide to wholesale insurance professionals and the market?
· Threats – what are the potential threats or impacts of the trend to the wholesale insurance marketplace?
· Provide insights and take a ways from what you have researched

Papers should be 4-6 single spaced pages with 1 inch margins, using 12 point Arial or Times New Roman font. Past year’s winning papers can be viewed here:

Papers are to be submitted to Bernd G. Heinze, Esq., Executive Director of the AAMGA: bernie no later than 5:00pm on February 15, 2016. The papers will be reviewed and scored by a team of AAMGA members, with results being announced by March 15, 2016.

RMI Professors Advisory Panel

You also may have heard that we have put together a RMI Professors Advisory Board. The group will meet by conference call quarterly so we can learn from you what you are hearing from the students, and to discuss what we are seeing in the insurance marketplace that can be translated into curriculums to make students better prepared. If you have not already responded indicating your interest and contact information, please do let me know so I can add you to the list. We very much look forward to your input and guidance as we look to help facilitate the pipeline of opportunities for students seeking to enter our profession.

Kind regards,

PS: For those not already aware, the American Association of Managing General Agents represents over 500 wholesale insurance domestic and international MGA’s, brokers, program administrators and managers, aggregators, insurers, reinsurers, Lloyd’s underwriters and the London Market, as well as other international underwriters and companies. Gross written premium among the wholesale underwriters amounted to $32 billion in 2014.
