There’s still time to apply for the NAPSLO Internship Program!

The National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices (NAPSLO) would like to remind interested students that applications for the 2015 NAPSLO Summer Internship Program will be accepted through October 15, 2014. Please take note of this date; it is two months earlier than years past.

This program offers participants a comprehensive view of the surplus lines insurance industry by assigning them to spend time with both a surplus lines carrier and a surplus lines broker firm throughout the summer.

The NAPSLO Internship Program runs for nine weeks in the summer with the dates varying somewhat depending on intern and host schedules. Five weeks are spent with a carrier firm; four weeks are spent with a broker. Hosts pay each intern an $18/hour salary while NAPSLO will assist in arranging housing and transportation, will pay a stipend to the intern and provides reimbursement for travel-related expenses.

The committee anticipates selecting approximately 15 interns this year, and will place selected participants with member companies in a wide variety of U.S. cities including New York, Phoenix, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Kansas City. Many NAPSLO members view this program as critical to their efforts to recruit and retain the next generation of surplus lines professionals, and interns are often offered positions with their hosts before completing the summer.

Interns who successfully complete the program are eligible for further engagement with NAPSLO, including an expenses-paid opportunity to attend the year’s NAPSLO Annual Convention to meet with and observe industry leaders working with one another at the surplus lines industry’s premier convention. Those attending the Convention will be interviewed by NAPSLO for additional scholarship opportunities in London and Bermuda.

Prudential Actuarial Summer Bridge Program – applicants wanted!


Prudential would like to invite YOU, or someone you know, to apply for the Actuarial Success Awareness Program (ASAP).

What is the summer bridge program?

The ASAP Summer Bridge Program will lay the foundation for Mathematics majors expressing interest in the Actuarial Leadership Development Program internships and the actuarial career.

When is the bridge program?

This program is a 1-week training program that takes place during the month of June at the Prudential headquarters in Newark NJ. Expenses related to housing and travel to Newark are paid by Prudential. A reasonable stipend is also provided to each participant to assist with expenses for the week.

What will I do during the bridge program?

Students who are part of the Bridge program will be offered the following training:

1. Exam preparation

2. Job Shadowing

3. Team building activities

4. Exposure to Prudential’s full internship program

5. Mentoring

Why should I spend my summer at Prudential’s bridge program?

At the completion of the 1-week summer experience, students interested in pursuing a career in Actuarial Science at Prudential will be considered for future internship opportunities, supported through the exam process, and have the opportunity to work with an actuarial mentor.

Gamma Iota Sigma, Organizational Meeting Follow-up

Hello all,

My thanks to those of you who attend our first meeting last night! We appreciated your interest and input.

For those of you who would like to become members, theprocess is very simple. There is a PDF version of the membership form attached to this email. Print it out, fill it out (front AND back), and take it, along with a $30 check made out to Baylor University, to Ms. Peggy Naumann in the Finance Office (HSB 344).

As a reminder, if you are interested in attending the 43rd Annual Gamma Iota Sigma Conference in Dallas from October 2 to 4 (Thursday through Saturday), registration is due this Friday, September 12.

If you would like to attend the conference, please go to the link below, sign up on the GIS Career Center, and upload a PDF of your resume. Registration for the conference cannot be completed until you have uploadedyour resume!

After having done that, please email me to let me know you are planning on going to the conference. Registration for the conference must be submitted by chapter, rather than individually. Therefore, I will be registering everyone and reserving rooms on Friday afternoon. So please email me before noon on Friday. If I try to register anyone late, there is no guarantee that there will be any slots left open.

Underwriting Professional Development Program – Travelers Insurance (Texas locations)

The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TRV) plans to conduct interviews through career services at Baylor on October 15 for its Underwriting Professional Development Program (Texas locations).

Travelers’ Underwriting Professional Development Program is a year round training program in which 25 newly minted college graduates from throughout the United States participate in on the job training in local offices as well as classroom training at Travelers’ corporate headquarters in Saint Paul, MN and Hartford, CT. This is a tremendous opportunity for applying marketing and analytic skills.

DFW RIMS Scholarships

DFW RIMS is proud to continue its program of offering scholarships to outstanding applicants who are focused on a career in risk management, insurance and related disciplines. The award requires the recipient be enrolled full-time at an institution of higher education during the academic year. Awards vary depending on multiple factors, including the available amount of the scholarship fund, the number of eligible applicants, and the applicants’ qualifications. The awards generally run in the range of $250 to $3,000 per scholarship.

The DFW RIMS Education Committee will consider applicants who meet some or all of the following criteria:

1. enrollment status: full-time undergraduate or graduate student (preferably undergraduate junior/senior)

2. field of study – normally a risk management discipline within a business curriculum

3. career objective in risk management

4. grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale

5. relevant work experience

6. leadership skills

7. need

8. DFW RIMS membership (note that free student memberships are available)

9. membership in the Gamma Iota Sigma risk management fraternity

The scholarship applications deadline is September 15. Scholarship recipients are announced in late September or early October and recipients are requested to attend DFW RIMS’s Fall Conference in order to receive their scholarship. RIMS Conference Award

DFW RIMS typically awards opportunities to attend the national RIMS Conference to one or more college students. The DFW RIMS Education Committee will consider applicants who meet some or all of the following criteria:

1. enrollment status: full-time undergraduate or graduate student (preferably undergraduate senior)

2. field of study: normally a risk management discipline within a business curriculum

3. career objective in risk management

4. grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale

5. relevant work experience

6. leadership skills

7. DFW RIMS membership (note that free student memberships are available)

8. membership in the Gamma Iota Sigma risk management fraternity

Students are expected to attend the entire conference and a mentor will be assigned to provide guidance if needed. Students will be asked to write a brief summary of the conference experience; these summaries may be published in one of the DFW RIMS monthly newsletters. Awards include conference attendance at the student rate (student will need to become a RIMS member), round trip airfare, hotel accommodations (2 students per room), and an honorarium check for expenses.
