February 17, 2014

Dear Insurance Professor or Guidance Professional:

The Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation is now accepting applications for scholarships for the 2014-15 school year from students pursuing insurance or business related studies. The Foundation awarded 14 $5,000 scholarships in 2013 and we expect to award a similar number this year. I hope you will encourage your students to apply for the scholarships.

Qualifications can be found in the Foundation section of the NAPSLO website (www.napslo.org). In general, students must be enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree program, majoring in Accounting, Actuarial Science, Business, Economics, Finance, Insurance, Management, Marketing, Mathematics, Risk Management, or Statistics. Students also must have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above and be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours each semester. Financial need is considered in awarding scholarships. Previous recipients are eligible to reapply.

To be considered for the scholarships, students must submit:
• Completed application and personal statement of career objectives
• Two letters of recommendation
• Official academic transcript

The deadline to submit all materials is June 1 and additional information and application materials are available online.

The Foundation was founded in 1991 to help provide educational opportunities to people in the industry and also to those pursuing insurance studies. With the establishment of the scholarship program, the Foundation has expanded its efforts to help those interested in pursuing insurance studies. The scholarship program also compliments other efforts, including NAPSLO’s summer internship program, which I’m sure you are familiar, and the Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance (ASLI) designation program, which offers advanced education about this segment of the industry.

If you have any questions regarding the program, please call the Foundation at 816.741.3910.

Sincerely,

Insurance Industry Internship Opportunities

Hello Professor Garven,

I’m writing to share with you internship opportunities I have for your risk and insurance students. The Claims and Litigation Management Alliance (www.theclm.org) is coordinating a claims management internship program for the summer of 2014. We have more than 30 openings available with various companies (including CNA, ACE, Chubb and XL Speciality) across the country. The positions allow interns to earn a claim adjuster license and pays $6,400 for eight weeks.

I’m posting the opportunity on your school’s career resource center, but also wanted to provide you with the attached flyer about the program that you can share with your students.

Thank you and we hope to see some Baylor students apply for this opportunity.
